Syracuse star
By the time Carmelo Anthony joined
the Syracuse Orange, he became a star. He averaged 22.2 points and 10 rebounds
and Sporting News named him a first team All-American as a freshman. But he
saved his best for the NCAA tournament. In 2003, he led Syracuse to a title
over Kansas. Anthony played the college game better than any freshman in NCAA
basketball ever. He was the third to be named Most Outstanding Player at the
Final Four but the first to function as the dominant member of a championship
team since freshman regained eligibility in 1972. Anthony ended his first
college season by making Syracuse the nation’s best team that year.
