According to this article, they determine the
contributions that make an athlete a superstar in that sport. They assume that
in individual sports, the most talented athlete enjoys the highest probability
of winning. They show this by using professional soccer as their example. First
you have to estimate a team production function to identify the playing
characteristics that significantly influence the probability of team winning.
Then you use the individual performance statistics of all variables that have
proved to be critical for winning as indicators of the player’s talent. They
estimated the impact of talent, popularity and various controls on the player’s
market value, using data from the highest German soccer league. They also found
evidence that both talent and nonperformance related popularity increases the
market value of soccer stars. Every goal scored by an individual increases the
player’s market value and shows their star performance.
